Erik Szabó / White Unicorn — the venture-building layer

The “translation into a viable company” layer that sits alongside, not inside, the research and clinical stack. He brings the builder layer this ecosystem most lacks: company building, early capital, and market access alongside research and clinical validation.

Core framing line. “A talented researcher is not an ecosystem.” The bottleneck is translation, not invention.

Positions

Managing Director / CEO and founder of White Unicorn Health/Medtech Incubator and co-founder of Goroid Venture Studio — investor, incubator, and product-development partner in one.

Track record

  • Scaling and exit. Late-stage founder of the digital agency Carnation, which grew to 120+ people, won 100+ local and international awards (clients including Adidas, Aston Martin, Coca-Cola), and was acquired by WPP, the world’s largest agency network (profile).
  • Industry institution-building. Former board member of the Hungarian Advertising Association; founder of the Hungarian chapter of IAB (bio).
  • Investor experience. Angel investor after the exit; one portfolio company listed on the Budapest Stock Exchange’s XTEND market.
  • Engineering foundation. MSc in computer engineering, University of Veszprém, 1999 (interview, HU).

Capital

White Unicorn won HUF 250M from NKFIH’s Startup Factory programme, topped up with private capital to HUF 284M, for 10–15 early-stage startups (NKFIH, project page). Typical ticket: HUF 20–30M, with co-investment for larger clinical steps (Growth Magazin).

Relevant portfolio

As translation templates, not as this ecosystem’s own output:

  • Theia Labs — AI-based ophthalmic image diagnostics.
  • Auxiliis Biomarker — biomarkers plus software interpretation in rheumatoid arthritis.

Both are templates for digital, biomarker-based clinical decision support (portfolio).

Existing network

Technology-transfer offices at the universities of Szeged, Pécs, Debrecen and Pannonia; co-investors including HunBAN, Lunar Program and Gateway Ventures; MDR/FDA service providers already in-network (ecosystem). Connecting ELTE and Semmelweis would extend this network toward psychiatry specifically.

The five-test screen

His project-evaluation framework, directly reusable here:

TestQuestion
Clinical problemIs there a real, named clinical problem?
Workflow fitDoes it fit how clinicians actually work?
Evidence planIs there a credible plan to generate evidence?
Regulatory pathIs the MDR route understood?
Adoption modelWho pays, and why would they adopt it?

These apply directly to speech- and behaviour-based digital biomarkers and to the Argus Cognitive case. → Clinical AI translation

International focus

In his view, Hungarian medtech should be built from the start to attract international strategic partners (Startup Online, HU) — a match for the Copenhagen and Sorbonne connections in this ecosystem.

Proposed roles

  • Workshop. Innovation-perspective speaker; closing-roundtable “market reality” voice. Talk: “Building a MedTech Ecosystem.” In-person participation confirmed.
  • Ecosystem. Venture-building and investment partner, startup screening, team-building (CEO / product lead), capital connections — not a research or clinical role.

Disambiguation. The Hungarian White Unicorn (whiteunicorn.hu) is not the Indian investor White Unicorn Ventures.
