An English-language, hybrid workshop bringing together psychiatry, clinical linguistics, multimodal artificial intelligence, avatar-based human interaction, and medtech innovation.

Theme

How could speech, social interaction and other behavioural signals help clinicians recognise changes in mental and cognitive health?

The workshop explores how artificial intelligence and digital measures could complement clinical expertise in mental health, neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative conditions. The discussion spans spontaneous speech and Speech Gap measures, multimodal behaviour analysis, biological and precision psychiatry, avatar-based interaction, clinical validation, and responsible healthcare innovation.

The event will also introduce the Precision Psychiatry Ecosystem, a developing collaborative framework for researchers, clinicians, technology developers and innovation partners in Hungary and abroad, meant to connect complementary expertise, identify feasible joint projects, and build the conditions for multilingual, clinically grounded research.

These approaches are intended to quantify information pieces and assist, not replace, clinicians. The workshop addresses reliability, interpretability, privacy, data protection, ethics, regulation, and the practical demands of evaluation in real healthcare settings.

It connects seven complementary perspectives: precision psychiatry (biological, immunological, registry-based, biobank-based and omics-informed approaches), clinical psychiatry (borderline personality disorder, psychotherapy processes, social cognition, emotion regulation), neurolinguistics (temporal characteristics of spontaneous speech), multimodal AI (verbal and non-verbal behaviour during structured clinical interactions such as ADOS-2), a translational case (Argus Cognitive and its Neurora platform), avatar and human–AI interaction, and innovation (viable medtech startups in Hungary and internationally). Finally, the information structure backing research, development and test phases using AI technologies is presented — the layer this wiki itself belongs to.

The Speech Gap story

Speech Gap can distinguish people suffering from psychiatric problems from typical subjects in diverse cases; its sensitivity has been demonstrated in Hungarian and in English. Prof. Dr. János Kálmán, a prominent Hungarian psychiatrist, was honoured by Gedeon Richter Plc with the Richter Merit Medal for his groundbreaking development of the Speech-GAP Test®. The tool can be introduced for trend detection in therapies.

Why this workshop matters

Precision psychiatry is becoming increasingly relevant as AI and digital technologies make it possible to combine speech, behavioural, questionnaire-based and clinical data for earlier and more individualised detection of mental-health risks. This is especially important given the growing demand for mental-health care among children, adolescents and elderly people, while psychiatric services are often overloaded. Low-cost, privacy-preserving tools — such as short structured speech tasks or tablet-based assessments — could support early screening, triage, longitudinal monitoring, and more timely referral, without replacing the clinician.

Goal and expected impact

A concrete map of collaboration opportunities linking ELTE, Semmelweis University, University of Szeged, international clinical and AI partners, Argus Cognitive, and the Hungarian healthtech ecosystem, with a focus on scalable, sustainable, and clinically grounded digital tools for mental health and neurodegenerative diseases.

What the workshop should settle

The workshop is expected to uncover which data collection can be joined, what the shared minimum measurement is, who owns clinical and technical responsibilities, what the next fundable result is, and which claims are ready for public use. → Project structure in Plane
